Greetings, What a great service this will be when it is all up and running. I am seeking help for my cousin who lives in Chicago and has to move. She is 50, and has had a fragile mental state especially with depression and at times of trauma. It increased dramatically at the time of her Mother’s death. I believe her 4 cats and 2 birds are what has saved her sanity and allowed her to function partway.

However, She has not been able to find viable employment. She has been employed in the past as an X-Ray tech at Cook County Hospital, and even further classes towards MRI’s etc. Unfortunately, as her brother notes, that was one of the expensive private education systems where she now owes money. Her present work, part-time, is working in a department store but it is not enough income to really sustain her. Her car gave out. So she is handicapped triply in seeking other employment, in just feeding herself and her pets.
Everyone has tried to talk to her about having to either place them somewhere reputable for living, or adoption, or to have them put to sleep. She is almost inconsolable with having to make any of the choices. She has friends she could stay with and room, but no pets allowed. I have talked with her in the past about the no-kill shelter option but she seems to have been unable to find a place for them.
Would you have any suggestions on that? Thank you, Joyce M. Simmerman

Please call the pet helpline: 312 409 1162 for suggestions. There are organizations specifically dedidcated to rescuing birds and they can advise you on that or you Google bird rescues in Chicago. I am sure you are right about the animals saving her sanity. It is hard to place in a no-kill, but not impossible. I would call all the cat organizations in town and in your area. Felines Inc, Tree House, Harmony House. Depending on their age and state of health you can also call Anti-Cruelty – not a no kill, but a great organization which has hundreds of people passing through their doors looking for pets every week. If they are friendly, come to the front of the cage type cats this could work for them. Lake Shore has a home to home program you can talk to Ann or Elizabeth about when they respond to your call. It would be a big help to her mental state I am sure if she could keep one cat, and I am sorry if this is not possible. There are pet food pantrys located around town. When you talk to Ann or Elizabeth, they can tell you if there is one located close to your friend’s place. Tree House is in Uptown and Bucktown, Animal Welfare League is located at 6224 S Wabash with another site in Chicago Ridge, and they all have their own rules so be sure to check before you visit. Also, many food pantries now carry small amounts of pet food to help people, so perhaps you are aware of those in your area? Such terrible things happen to people – thanks, Joyce for trying to help your friend.

My daughter (who had taken her two cats, Gonja and Jasmine, to your establishment for yrs prior to their recent deaths) has 3 male cats that she has been caring for since their birth in late April of this year. She was unable to take the “family” (mom, and 4 male kittens) into her small home due to rennovation and a new husband who is alergic to animals. She has made sure that all of the cats had their shots and were “fixed” and that they had food, water, an outside shelter. She has played with them in the morning before going to work and again in the evenings upon her return. This morning, she
called me in tears and completely distraught. One of the kittens was struck in the head by a car and killed. She is desparately looking for a no-kill shelter – at least for the 3 remaining kittens, who could be adopted. Is there any way that you may be able to take all or even one of them? If not, could you recommend a place that she could take them to. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Sally, my daughter, will be leaving the country this Saturday afternoon for her work, so time is of the essence. If you could e-mail her at sallyjn02@yahoo.com or me at jvoynar@att.net (or call 312-560-3374 or me at 248-760-9962), to let us know, we would be ever so grateful. Sincerely, Ms. Jo Naylor

Here’s the problem – Sally needs to call ALL the shelters every day until she leaves. I hope she is doing that. I would also hope that she did not wait until this very last minute to do something about the cats before she leaves the country. Has she tried all her neighbors and asked them to ask their friends who are pet people if they would like a healthy cat? She should call Anti-cruelty (312) 644-8338, Tree House 773) 227-5535 and all the shelters she can find on Google since the young cats have shots and are fixed. She owns these cats and they are not strays and therefore not subject to be transferred to Animal Care and Control from any facility. Also in emergency situations always use the phone first. You can then follow up with an email and a comment on the website. We know it’s quicker for us and probably for most other shelters too. We return all phone calls, so you will not be ignored. Thanks for taking the time to find help for your daughter – it’s great when the whole family can get involved, and maybe if someone can help, but only a week from now, you will have someone who can take in the cats for that limited time.
