Lake Shore Animal Shelter has been an all volunteer group for more than 40 years, from the shelter volunteers to the board volunteers. That’s right. Money raised for Lake Shore Animal Shelter goes to house, feed, train, and vet the dogs, with an average of more than 80% of every dollar going to direct care. The balance goes to printed materials and fundraising. Why Run for Lake Shore? Lake Shore Animal Shelter, Chicago’s Pioneer No-Kill Animal Shelter, is one of the first No-Kill shelters in the US (1966). Dr. Lloyd Prashun, Lake Shore founder and noted Veterinarian, led the modern animal welfare movement and established Chicago's Animal Care and Control. Lake Shore’s primary mission is to save homeless dogs and cats from non-medical euthanasia: to stop the needless killing of innocent pets. Homeless companion animals have a safe, comfortable, structured environment prior to re-homing with basic training, socialization and lots of love from all our volunteers to ease the transition. Intake priority is given to owners unable to care for their pets due to illness, disability, involuntary change in housing/economic circumstance, or death. Lake Shore Animal Shelter guarantees to take custody of any animal adopted out, even years later; no questions asked. All Lake Shore dogs and cats have a home for life. This fulfills the promise of a no-kill shelter, removing any possible burden to other shelters and ensuring a home for the life of the dog or cat. Give us a call today; even though the Marathon is not until Fall, registration is filling up and we are advised it may close at any time. 312-409-1162.
