Young Leaders: 9 Year Olds Run Charitable Drive for Dogs

ImageOne o f Lake Shore’s volunteers, Pauline, sent an email request to her list for towels and blankets. Maggie heard about it from her mom and she told her friend Caitlin. They took it upon themselves to go door-to-door through the neighborhood to help the dogs at Lake Shore Animal Shelter. They knocked, and walked, asked, and packed and three huge bags of towels and blankets later, a mountain of donations taller than the girls themselves resulted!

ImageMaggie and Caitlin from Glencoe decided they were going to do something to help dogs in shelters and they did it.

When they delivered the towels to Lake Shore, the family watched the dogs at play and asked if there were any hypoallergenic dogs available. Lake Shore made a special effort to look for such a dog and within a week got a call from someone who had to give up a 4-month-old Standard Poodle that turned out not to be a good match with their older dog. Volunteer Doris collected the dog, another volunteer, Lisa, fostered the dog until the shots and vetting could be complete, and four days later the family came to collect their newest member.

The Poodle puppy has been christened “Comet”, and has since proven to be a very happy bit of Christmas serendipity.

Many thanks to Maggie and Caitlin, their families, and their neighbors! It takes people willing to go out of their way to keep not-for-profits working. Maggie and Caitlin at the tender age of 9 are already leading the way for their peers.
