ImageWhen I came across Nadine M. Rosin’s blog, I found a great story about senior canine care, holistic choices in canine cancer, impressively researched information on toxics in our homes (dryer sheets—never use for dog clothes, towels or bed covers!), grieving consultation, and of course, the story of her own experience with her dog Buttons, and the strength of the human-animal bond. Here’s her message to you:

"Do you love your pet as much as some people love their children? Do you feel misunderstood by others when it comes to how deeply you cherish your pet? Are you embarrassed to reveal how much you miss an animal that has passed away? You are not alone. Help is here…

When my adopted daughter, an eleven-year cancer survivor on all natural remedies, died in my arms the week before her nineteenth birthday, some people treated me as if I had just lost an easily replaceable houseplant. Why? Because her stalwart, humorous, and loving spirit, which inspired and impelled my own emotional healing, happened to reside in a canine body.

In my search for comfort and camaraderie throughout the grieving process, I found no pet-loss books that fully addressed the depth of my pain or the spiritual companionship and telepathic communication that my dog, Buttons and I shared. What I did find, was a poll conducted by Purina concluding that forty-seven million people in the U.S. consider their pets to be their children or family members. It was reassuring to know I was not alone in my experience.

Buttons was much more than a beloved pet for two decades. She was the soul who helped me open and heal my heart, which for much of my adult life, and most of my childhood, had been bolted shut and shattered."

The above paragraphs are from The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood, a true story about the human-animal bond, healing cancer holistically, senior canine care, and an empowering new take on the grieving process when a beloved animal passes away. This book, which reads like a novel, will take you on a journey into the unlimited love and joy residing at the heart of all true relationships. At the same time, it will lead you deeply into yourself.

The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood also has an underlying 3-fold mission:

  • Helping pet parents realize we may be unconsciously contributing to the skyrocketing increase of cancer in our pets by unknowingly creating highly toxic environments in our homes.

  • Providing comfort, camaraderie, and validation for pet parents experiencing the devastating loss of a beloved pet

  • Helping to remove the words, “It’s just a dog/cat” from the lips of non pet parents everywhere

My name is Nadine M. Rosin and as the author of this book, I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to talk about it here with you. For almost 2 decades, I had the privilege of being Buttons' mom. If she were here and able to speak, I think she'd be sharing something like:

"Woof! Buttons is my name... helping other doggers is my game: I was a happy, kooky cockapoo/terrier. When I was 8-years old, I was diagnosed with deadly cancer. The vet gave me 6 weeks to live unless I had amputation, chemotherapy and radiation. Instead of conforming with the traditional prescribed treatment, my mom launched an intense holistic campaign which included clearing my inner and outer environment of all toxins, cleansing my body of all residual toxins, and then giving my body the nutritional support it needed in order to heal itself. Within a few months, I was CANCER-FREE. I thrived for an additional 11 years until I passed peacefully of old age, the week before my 19th birthday. The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood is the story of how Mom and I saved each other's life."

To all my new friends at the Lake Shore Animal Shelter, I hope you find our story touching and informative and that it brings you and your pets many more healthy years together. As pet parents, you already know that when people go to a shelter, they are not looking to rescue an animal, but rather, looking for an animal to rescue them. Happy reading!
