This is a great story from a new adopting family of Winston who had suffered neglect for much of his young life.  A two-year-old, he came to Lake Shore matted, filthy, with a sad indication that he had been crated for very long periods: he never looked up to your eyes, but was fixated on feet, and would just turn in circles as if he were contained in a limited space.  His hind quarters were under-developed, but he liked being carried and lap sitting.  He was fostered by Joyce Curran for exercise and TLC, and was professionally groomed.  It’s part of the important work all our foster parents do for these precious companions. Winston’s spiffy clean up must have given him a new outlook that caught Lauri’s eye.  She and her family adopted him and provided her first report:

“Elizabeth,

I have to tell you....what a find!  Winston, now Pork Chop! (aka Porkie)
He is such a great dog!  He was a bit apprehensive at first in the car,
but then instantly bonded with Addison who took him on the longest walk
ever.  We already had an area set up for him by our recliners with a
doggie bed, bowl, bone, blanket and toy.  He immediately claimed ownership
and laid down.  I needed to go back to work in the afternoon and he spent
about 3 hours in my husband’s lap getting to know each other.  Needless to
say, they both found a new friend.  We then had to go to a softball game
and Porkie tagged along.  There were a few things that spooked him and he
wouldn't walk, but with a little coaxing he did just find.  Everyone loved
him and he just said hello to everyone.  Porkie goes wherever we do if he
can.  He is a great car dog.

He has not had an accident in the house and is quite fine with spending
his evening in the room we have set up for him, blocked by a baby gate.
Gave him a bath on Friday.  He did really well even with the blow dryer!
He has not had an accident in the house and no matter when we take him
out, whether its 30 minutes or 3 hours he goes.

He didn't eat well for the last few days.  He would sneak a piece of cat
food and run and eat it in secret.  This morning he ate quite a bit of his
food.  Animal Needs and Feed in Arlington Heights has Canidae and is quite
cheaper than Petco.  I also had him try Solid Gold, Barking at the Moon.
This is what he gobbled up this morning.

The cats and he seem to be old soul mates.  They did much better than
anticipated.  I thought we would have a lot of hissing and spitting, but
Pork Chop left them alone and let them come up to him.  Once the sniffing
was done, it is still going on a little, it’s like he's always been there.

My daughter, Nikki, who first said she wouldn't walk him when we talked
about it as a family (the teenager attitude) has bonded and has taken him
on the most walks and showed him off to most of her friends. He sits
quietly on her lap and just soaks in all up.

He showed some playfulness and energy last night and this morning....I
think he is beginning to realize he is here to stay. I almost want to say this is
too good to be true.....but I think he feels the love in the house and knows he belongs.  We are so lucky to have come across him.

Thanks so much and I will keep you updated and send you pictures when his
hair grows in!

Lauri C.”
