Lake Shore Animal Shelter, Chicago's pioneer no-kill
shelter for dogs and cats, has worked to reduce the needless killing of
pets through shelter and adoption programs, public humane
education efforts, spay/neuter promotion, and through community
participation since 1966. Some of our companion
animals are family pets who must be given up, through no fault of their
own, due to ill health, death, or sudden financial constraints.
Many of our companion animals are those in the most dire need:
abandoned dogs and cats who have been fostered, given proper medical
care, basic training, and who are adoptable.
Donations,
volunteers, foster parents, pet sponsors, and event sponsors are always
needed and welcomed. Lake Shore is not funded by any city, state,
or federal grants.
Lake Shore cooperates with other
agencies in anti-cruelty efforts, backing legislation that promotes the
care and welfare of animals and that punishes those who would torture
and maim animals. We join with other humane societies as a united and
forceful presence in court cases prosecuting animal abusers. Lake Shore is an active member of CASA, the Chicago Animal Shelter Alliance, uniting with Chicago sheltering organizations to accelerate the rate of adoptions citywide. |
